For generations, the fragrance of an agarbatti has signaled something deeply familiar in Indian homes: the beginning of a prayer, a festival morning or a quiet moment of reflection. India’s relationship with incense goes back centuries, when aromatic woods, herbs, flowers and resins were burned during religious and spiritual practices, making fragrance inseparable from ritual.
That connection remains strong, but incense is finding new meaning in modern Indian homes. From meditation and yoga to relaxation and home ambience, fragrance is moving beyond the puja room and becoming part of everyday wellbeing and lifestyle. As the occasions for scent expand, so do the possibilities for fragrance creators.
Here are five trends shaping the category today:
Tradition is being reimagined: Classic Indian fragrances such as sandalwood, rose and jasmine remain deeply familiar, but they are being interpreted in more sophisticated ways. Fine-fragrance-inspired compositions, richer blends and contemporary aromatic accords are giving traditional incense a premium makeover. For manufacturers, the opportunity lies in retaining the cultural familiarity consumers recognise while creating fragrances that feel distinctly modern.
From prayer to pause: incense enters the wellness routine: Moving beyond religious rituals, incense is increasingly appearing in meditation corners, yoga routines and evening wind-down routines. As usage shifts from purely devotional to emotional and functional, consumers are looking for fragrances that help create a mood, whether that means feeling calm, focused, grounded or restored. This gives fragrance manufacturers room to formulate around a desired feeling or occasion rather than a fragrance note alone.
The incense experience is going smokeless: How Indian consumers fragrance their homes is also evolving. Alongside agarbatti and dhoop, reed diffusers, essential-oil diffusers and other flameless formats are becoming part of the home-fragrance repertoire. Low-smoke, charcoal-free and bambooless incense offer another bridge between traditional rituals and contemporary preferences.
Scent manufacturers, today, are thinking beyond the stick. A fragrance developed for burning incense needs to be interpreted differently for a reed or oil diffuser, where diffusion, intensity and longevity create an entirely different olfactory experience.
Cleaner formats are changing what premium means: As consumers become more conscious about what they bring into their homes, premiumisation is increasingly connected with ingredients and formulation as much as fragrance. Interest in natural and Ayurvedic blends, low-smoke formats, ethical sourcing and sustainable packaging is growing. This challenges manufacturers to deliver the richness and performance consumers expect while responding to evolving preferences around cleaner, more considered products.
Fragrance is getting more personal and more Indian:The future of home fragrance is unlikely to be one-size-fits-all. Consumers are choosing scents around rooms, moods, seasons and occasions, creating opportunities for curated collections, fragrance layering and regionally inspired blends. Importantly, fragrances also need to perform in the realities of Indian homes, where heat, humidity and room size can significantly change how a scent diffuses. For fragrance manufacturers, understanding these nuances can help create scents that feel personal while performing consistently for the consumers they are designed for.
Indian incense remains rooted in centuries of tradition, but its fragrance language is expanding, giving manufacturers an opportunity to preserve what consumers love while creating scents for how India lives today.
